Trap Law’s
Saw a great blog post today over on ‘Objectify This!’ about the passage of a new TRAP law in Wisconsin; but when i went to leave a comment it wouldn’t let me because i wasn’t logged in… except that there’s no way to register or login on their site. gah! hate that.
anyway. So, since I went to all the trouble to write it out I figured i’d post it up here instead along with a link to the original article. so here it is:
Original Article: You Have the Right to Fewer Choices
If anti-choice legislators *really* wanted to stop women from being “coerced” into abortion they’d support social welfare programs that make it easier for low-income women to afford to be mothers, not place more restrictions on women’s ability to make their own decisions.
Every study ever done on the topic shows a direct correlation between low rates of abortion and stong social safety nets – which is why the Scandinavian countries have the lowest abortion rates in the industrialized world, even though abortion is not only freely available but actually *free* thanks to their socialized healthcare system.
It’s ridiculous that the same party that brought us rhetoric about ‘”welfare queens” and has done so much to demonize single mothers is the same party that wants to make it illegal for women who can’t afford children or who want to avoid being single mothers to control their own reproductive organs. Conservatives don’t really give a shit about babies or being pro-life, if they did they’d stop pushing anti-choice legislation and start devoting some of the millions of dollars they spend on anti-choice advertising and lobbying to push for socialized healthcare and strong safety nets – things tat would actually reduce the number of abortions that are performed every year far more effectively then pushing bullshit like this. After all, making something illegal is a tremendously inefective way to stop it – just look at the war on drugs.
But then it’s not really about stopping abortion is it? It’s about rounding up votes in the bible belt. And as long as America remains a Christian nation we’re going to keep having to fight this fight.
fuckers.
