independance!
another current events news article – activists in Vermont are trying to get their state to declare independence from the United States, and popular support for the move is up 5% from last year (from 8% to 13%).
What position should Anarchists take on this? personally, i’m inclined to support just about any move towards more local governance as a step in the right direction, but i know some of ya’ll anarcho-cynics are going to say that they don’t want to get rid of the State at all, just make it more local. which is true. but isn’t even that a step in the right direction?
I’ll tell ya one thing, if Californians were ever able to get a pro-independence initiative on the ballot I’d be all about it. hell, i’d be out there gathering signatures for it. I remember a few years ago several of the local anarcho’s in SF were trying to get a local SF ballot initiative together to have San Francisco declare itself independent from the US, we got started kind of late in the process and didn’t have time to get all the signatures but virtually everyone i talked to about the issue was supportive and signed our ballot initiative. and it was a great chance to talk about the benefits of local control vs centralization.
so what do ya’ll think?
