celebration of freedom
i just got back from a show, it was originally going to be a benefit for Josh Wolf, but then he got released and didn’t need any more benefits…
When our band signed on to do it the official cause had changed to a benefit for prisonblogs.org. there was also some talk of doing it as a benefit for rod coranodo, who is being threatened with 20 years in prison for talking about an arson he already served a five year sentance for committing. whether you agree with the ELF and using arson and other forms of property destruction as a tactic or not, the fact that someone is being threatened with 20 years in jail for talking is pretty ridiculous. For legal purposes I should probably state that neither I, my band, nor this website/blog condone or encourage arson or other illegal activities. So please don’t lock me up for writing about someone else talking about doing something…. In the end i don’t think the show actually made any money so questions of what it might have been a benefit for are kinda irrelevant, mostly it was a “yeah, josh is free!” party, which is a very positive thing. we’ve got to celebrate the small victories.
in any case, what with the last minute changeups and everything, only 70 or so people showed up, so it wasn’t huge, but it wasn’t tiny either. we shared the stage with 2 members of Molotov Mouths, a local Poetry group, and David Rovics, who is a sort of globetrotting 1-man harbringer of the the apocalypse, carying songs about rebellions big and small with him everywhere he goes. Dude is pretty much permanantly on tour, and he rocks.
anyway.
It was our first time performing with John, the new banjo player in my band, so we were all a bit nervous; but it came off without a hitch. good times. If you were there then thanks for coming out, and for everyone who couldn’t make it you missed a great show. next time…
